INFO ABOUT KUMASI

 

Kumasi is the second largest city of Ghana with more than 2 milion inhabitants. It is the capitcal of the Ashanti region and has a king. There are a lot to do and see in this lively city. 

 

Several festivals are celebrated in the region, the major ones being the Akwasidae and Adae Kese. These are religious festivals celebrated by some members of the Akan ethnic group of which the Ashanti belong. Some other festivals in the region are  :

  • Papa Festival

  • Kente Festival

  • Yaa Asantewaa Festival

  • Mmoa Nni Nko Festival

  • Nkyidwo Festival

The Manhyia Palace is the location where the Asante king is seated. Meetings between him, royal family members and others are sometimes open to the public, so that the Asante democracy is visible for everyone. 

 

One of the major areas of the city is the central market, called Kejetia. This market is not just a market; it is the largest market of Ghana with a rich assortment of products.   You can easily get lost in the labyrinth of little streets formed by the stalls. You can taste the good Ashanti kitchen here for sure and buy any unthinkable local prodct.  

 

A ten minutes walk from the market you can find the National Cultural Center in which a museum about the Ashanti history is located. Next to this, you can also find here an exhibition hall, a library and some shops. 

 

Kumasi is surrounded by beautiful nature, of which lake Bosumtwe is an eyecatcher. This lake is the largest natural lake of Ghana. You can also see a deep scarf and the mountains of Mampong.

TRANSPORT

It is a good way to move around the city by taxi and minvans (trotro). Negotiate about the price before you enter the taxi. The price of the trotro is fixed, depending on the area you are going. The taxis have no taxi meter. You can recognize an official taxi at the composition of certain colors. An example can be found below:

 

FOOD

Fufu with soup and meat or fish is a typical dish in Kumasi. Other dishes are: rice, yam (ampsi), plantain (fried or cooked), local & exotic vegetables etc. 

 

PEOPLE

The people of Kumasi are very friendly and sociable to give you a warm welcome and you will feel at home. You will never get lost, because there are always nice people around you who can tell you the right direction.
